Hollywood icon Jane Fonda was arrested in Washington DC on Friday 11 October on the steps of the US Capitol building.

Wearing a long red coat, a hat and dark boots, police officers further accessorised her look by placing plastic ties around her wrists before walking her to their vehicle.

About arrested
An arrest is the act of apprehending a person and taking them into custody, usually because they have been suspected of committing or planning a crime. After the person is taken into custody, they can be questioned further and/or charged. An arrest is a procedure in a criminal justice system.
Police and various other officers have powers of arrest. In some places, a citizen’s arrest is permitted; for example in England and Wales, any person can arrest “anyone whom he has reasonable grounds for suspecting to be committing, have committed or be guilty of committing an indictable offence,” although certain conditions must be met before taking such action.Similar powers exist in France, Italy, Germany, Austria and Switzerland if a person is caught in an act of crime and not willing or able to produce valid ID.
As a safeguard against the abuse of power, many countries require that an arrest must be made for a thoroughly justified reason, such as the requirement of probable cause in the United States. Furthermore, the time that a person can be detained in custody is relatively short (in most cases 24 hours in the United Kingdom and France and 24 or 48 hours in the United States) before the detained person must be either charged or released.

Has Jane Fonda ever been arrested before?

In 1970, Fonda was arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, where she was arriving after being a part of an anti-war speaking tour in Canada.

Fonda told the authorities that the pills which had been found in her luggage were just vitamins, however, according to Fonda, the officers who arrested her told her that they were acting on orders from the White House, where Richard Nixon was serving as president at the time.

Her website reads: ‘I told them what they were but they said they were getting orders from the White House–that would be the Nixon White House. I think they hoped this “scandal” would cause the college speeches to be canceled and ruin my respectability.

‘I was handcuffed and put in the Cleveland Jail, which is when the mug shot was taken. (I had just finished filming “Klute” so, yes, it was the Klute haircut).’

She was later released on bond and the charges were dismissed.

Decades later in 2017, she started selling merch adorned with her mugshot to raise funds for the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Power Potential.
