The former TOWIE star, who is fresh off a stint presenting on US telly, wrapped up the latest series of the BBC One factual series on Wednesday (September 11) with an ancestry search that led him to the Spanish region Andalucia.

Now, Mark has definitely been known for his fiery temper at times (just ask Danny Dyer) and this episode of Who Do You Think You Are? shined a light on why he’s been so volatile in the past.

It turns out there’s a perfectly reasonable explanation for why in front of a packed nightclub and then battered Kirk in the boxing ring: it’s in his blood!

In his journey, Mark discovered that he’s actually descended from an EastEnd boxer as well as a 17th century master swordsman from Andalucia called David de Antonio Mendoza.

“You do not mess with David de Antonio Mendoza,” he joked. “You do that, you’re in trouble!”


Mark later beamed: “He was a proper legend.”

Mark even got a justification for his notorious love of nightlife hotspot Marbella, since that’s where his nine-times great-grandfather and his family lived.

“That’s my blood. Straight outta Marbs,” he quipped.

Speaking more seriously about appearing on Who Do You Think You Are? on Heart FM recently, Mark explained how his wife Michelle Keegan’s own experience on the series prepared him to hear the more upsetting parts of his ancestry.

“I’ve always wanted to do the show and it’s an amazing show to be a part of but the fact that she [Michelle Keegan] had done it and I had seen what had been dug up from her past, it gave me even more enthusiasm to be a part of it,” he recalled.

“And she told me how fantastic it was and I was very jealous that she had had this opportunity and like to find her family heritage so I wanted mine and if we ever have to tell our kids when we have them, touch wood we do, you know about our past.

“She’s got that story about her family, and now so have I, so our kids are going to be very lucky that they can find out both where their mum and dad’s families are from.

“When you find out an ancestor of yours has been tortured and burned at the stake, it’s not until that happens that you really sit back and think, ‘This world’s crazy’.”
